The Big News – Reason 5 ReFills

I’m happy to (finally) announce the release of a project I’ve been working on all summer. I’ve partnered with the ├╝ber-cool Swedish software company, Propellerhead, to produce two ReFills designed specifically for Reason 5 and Record 1.5.

After spending the past several months practically living in the beta version of this software (officially released just over a month ago), I can easily say this latest release contains two of the biggest innovations to ever take place in the world of loops; The Dr. Octo Rex and Kong. They allow the user to dissect and interact with loops in a way that was never before possible. Some bold statements? Yes (especially from someone partnering with them!), but if you take a look at the demo videos on their website, you’ll understand where I’m coming from.

Anyway, enough gushing. You can check out my first two ReFills over on Propellerhead’s website, as well as The Loop Loft. Below are some videos that give you a peak inside of each ReFill pack.

For Good Reason

Nucleus SoundLab just released a cool new ReFill for Reason called Filter Research 2 and they’ve been demoing this rather slick effects bundle with a loop from Pop Drums Vol 1. Check it out:

Via nucleus-soundlab.com:

Nucleus SoundLab is proud to announce a new effects ReFill for Propellerhead Reason and Record. Filter Research 2 is a continuation of the concept of complex effect devices built in the Reason environment. The original Filter Research has yet to be matched in terms of quality effects devices for Reason. Filter Research 2 builds on this strong foundation, but exceeds its predecessor in every way.

Indie Rock Drum Tips + REX Files

Some things to remember next time you play drums in an ‘indie rock’ band:

– The more your snare drum sounds like a cardboard box, the better.
– Never, and I mean never, mention those Dave Weckl albums you owned in high school.
– You’re going to look like a total douche in those skinny jeans no matter what you do. Just deal with it. Or you can always go the Tommy Lee route.

Loop #55

For today’s loop I played a pretty typical “indie rock” beat. A semi-limp left hand, no fancy business on the ride cymbal and just enough groove to make the girls dance. To take some of the extra sheen off, I re-amped the drum bus and turned on the bit crusher.

And for some exciting news: Starting tonight, I’ll be including REX files of every loop. Tell all of your DJ friends to start dropping in some “Gruss” at the clubs.
