When I started this blog (mainly as a way to share files with my friends) 2 1/2 years ago, I did so by recording drum loops in Logic, and then posting the entire multitrack session for download. This way not only a great way for me to practice both my production and performance chops, but as a way to collaborate with my musical friends, many who were living in Los Angeles, New York and London.
As things progressed and this blog transitioned into a full-blown production company, I shifted to the more traditional loop formats (stereo WAV, AIFF and REX2 files) in order to be compatible with all major DAWs and provide downloads of thousands of loops digital without being more than several gigabytes in size. As you probably know, the size of multitrack sessions can add up fast and storing all of that data (let alone, the bandwidth of transferring it to customers) was going to be crazy, crazy expensive.
Well, with the price of online storage dropping dramatically, I’m happy to say that I’m back to my roots…. recording multitrack drum sessions for The Loop Loft. To make these sessions compatible with all major DAWs we decided to provide the stems as wav files, rather than as Logic session files. So now you can fire up Ableton, Cubase, Garageband, Reaper or whatever your favorite DAW is and drag and drop the multitracks in. I’m pretty excited about the flexibility this will give people, allowing them to control every single detail of my drum tracks, from the panning of a tom to the amount of compression on the kick drum.
So, here you have it, my new baby: multitrack drum sessions. Check out the video below for a glimpse of how it all works.
“The Loop Loft has teamed up with Ableton to bring you a customized, “Live Ready” version of Hip Hop Drums Vol 1. This collection has been reconfigured from the ground up to work seamlessly inside of Live, and is fully integrated with custom drum racks, clips, effects, macro controls and hundreds of loops. And since it’s an official “Live Ready” pack, it automatically installs directly into your Ableton library with one click!”
It’s true, I’m back to blogging again on a regular basis. But not on this site…. I’ll be doing it over here at The Loop Loft, where I’m paid in nachos and beer to write about what I’m up to. And yes, I’ll still be providing free loops in WAV, REX2 and AIFF formats. Are we cool again?
So, make sure to update your RSS reader and add this feed to stay up to date with the latest loops!
After recording literally thousands of drum loops by myself, I’ve recently branched out and started producing loops with other artists. And not just drummers, but actual, real musicians. I kid, I kid…
The latest artist I’ve had the opportunity to work with is bassist extraordinaire, Janek Gwizdala. Janek is an old friend of mine from my Berklee days and is one of the most incredible bass players I’ve ever had the pleasure of performing with. While Janek tries not to brag about his performance credits with me, he’s also toured and recorded with some other musicians that you may have heard of…. Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Pat Metheney, to name a few.
While on a break from the road, Janek stopped by my studio and spent a day laying down a plethora of insanely awesome bass tracks in a bunch of different styles and tempos. These sessions were edited down, sliced and converted into a complete package of WAV, REX2, AIFF loops. We even customized a ReFill specifically for Reason 5. With that said, I’m proud to present my latest production for The Loop Loft, “Janek Gwizdala – The Fodera Sessions”. Check out this video preview of the Reason ReFill below:
We get it. You’re an indie artist and you’re not looking for over-produced drum loops that sound like outtakes from a 1987 Bon Jovi session. You’ll never book a show in Brooklyn with that kind of schlock on your tracks. This is exactly why we’ve created our latest collection, “Indie Rock Drums Vol 1“.
To accurately produce the sound and feel of these loops, we immersed ourselves into the indie rock lifestyle for an entire month, living, breathing and drinking in the $3,500 a month gutters of Williamsburg. We grew beards and then trimmed them into ironic mustaches. We rolled our own cigarettes. We rode fixies instead of taking cabs. We bathed ourselves in PBR. We had a Monday night residency at Pianos. We even acquired a trust fund so that we could spend our days hanging out in coffee shops, getting into heated debates about Pavement, and if they were better or worse after they kicked Gary Young out of the band.
We lived it… and now you can download it in all of its digital glory. Dirty but danceable DFA-approved beats, anthemic Arcade Fire-esque pounding, low-fi Strokes-ish uptempo rock, folkish Bon Ivery brushes… it’s all here. Each collection of grooves contains a variety of fills as well as individually sampled drums and cymbals, so you can easily program your own beats with the exact same sounds from the loop sessions. The sound and feel of Indie Rock Drums is now at your fingertips.
Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure to work with the amazing Celso Alberti (Steve Winwood, Airto, Flora Purim, Herbie Mann) on an in-depth collection of authentic Brazilian drum loops and samples. It’s been a pleasure to work with Celso and an incredible learning experience for me. There is such a vast amount of unique rhythms hailing from Brazil, we decided to focus on certain grooves and release them in a series of volumes. Today I’m happy to announce that Volume 1 is now available as a ReFill for Reason 5, as well as in WAV, AIFF and REX2 formats. Check out the previews below!
With 229 REX2 loops, 4 Combinators, 5 Kong and and 26 Dr Octo Rex Patches, The Funk Essentials ReFill is a collection of drum grooves and sounds inspired by everything from early Motown, spaced-out Funkadelic, dirty hip-hop, James Brown and everything else in between.
We took hundreds of super-funky rex drum loops and meticulously grouped them into custom Dr Octo Rex patches, allowing you to instantly trigger different beats and fills, all from a single player. To step up the funkitude another level, we created a series of custom Combinator patches that give you hands-on tweakage over a plethora of custom racks created by The Loop Loft. And with all of these funky drum samples mapped directly into Kong, you’ll breathe new life into your existing groove collection. Just drop any MIDI file onto a track and let the Funk Essentials ReFill do rest!
It’s time to get funky inside of Reason. It’s time for The Funk Essentials ReFill.

Yeah, it’s me. I’m still alive. I’ve spent the past two months knee-deep in diapers and spit-up, but I promise to return to a more regular blogging schedule soon. Until then, I just wanted to let you know about this crazy sale over at The Loop Loft. 50% off all Reason 5 Refills… this weekend only. Damnit, now that’s what I call a sale.
