Hippies Love Miles Davis
Ryan on Mar 2nd 2010
Here’s a great video (with pristine audio) of Miles and crew at the 1970 Isle of Wright Festival which took place, oddly enough, at The Isle of Wright.
Note – Dave Holland was rockin’ the “thin headband look” 39 years before Lindsay Lohan. A true innovator, both in jazz bass and fashion.

No, this isn’t a setup to a weird joke.
Damn, the 80’s looked fun.

Lunch Break – Seattle Style
Ryan on Feb 11th 2010
Here’s something to watch while you’re eating your gourmet lunch. Someone just emailed me this video (I swear I wasn’t Googling myself) recorded and produced by Kurt Lorenz that incorporates loop #35, some chilled out synths, and some nice footage of the city and outskirts of Seattle. If you watch closely, you can spot cameo appearances by both this Eddie and that Eddie.

My Drum
Ryan on Feb 5th 2010
When I feel the aggravation
When I feel the old frustrations
I go into my room and hit my drum
(hit it)
When I feel the time approaching
Deep inside a big explosion
I pickup my sticks (pickup my sticks) and hit my drum
(hit it)
I don’t need no tranquilizers (no oh yeah)
When I’m down the doc advises
If my sickness calls, I miss my drums
Nanananananannanannannanananna
When I lay me down to sleep (oh yeah uh come on)
There one thing I wish to keep (oh yeah uh come on)
Keep em within my reach, my set of uh drums, uh drums, uh drums
Hat tip Chad Clark.

Lunchtime “Tain”
Ryan on Jan 4th 2010
Here is some classic Jeff “Tain” Watts. Check out his highly melodic, ultra dynamic and amazingly powerful solo from a live performance with the Branford Marsalis quartet. I need to get on Ebay and track down one of those sweet Sabian Rocktagon crash cymbals.

Red Baron
Ryan on Dec 6th 2009
Painfully funky, this 1976 performance from the Montreux Jazz Festival featuring Billy Cobham, a young John Scofield, George Duke and Alphonso Johnson is one of the best recordings of “Red Baron” that I’ve seen or heard. Look for a Billy-inspired loop to be posted later today.

Sunday Scofield (& Metheny)
Ryan on Nov 8th 2009
I apologize for the lack of loops over the past few days. I’ve been busy updating my studio to Logic 9 and setting up a new iMac. Oh yeah, and I’ve been raking an insane amount of leaves. After spending the past eight years in NYC, with little more than 600 square feet to my name, I forgot what a massive pain in the ass a yard full of dead leaves can be.
Anyway, look for a bunch of new loops this week. Since I’ve doubled the size of my computer monitor, I figure I’ll be twice as productive when recording (or at least this is how I rationalized the purchase to my wife). In the meantime, here’s a live video from 1994 of John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Bill Stewart performing in Stuttgart, Germany. This track is called “Everybody’s Party” and can be found on their excellent Blue Note release, I Can See Your House From Here.

Jungle Jazz
Ryan on Oct 27th 2009
Here’s a nice impromptu drum half-circle (the dudes with the djembes must have been out on an EZ Wider run) in 3… or 6/8… whatever makes you happy, featuring Jamey Haddad, Danilo Perez and Osvaldo Jorge.

Here’s a nice profile of Steely Dan’s classic 1977 album, “Aja”.
